Law school is a post-graduate program to train lawyers. The instruction is generally rigorous, and often Socratic. In general, basic courses such as constitutional law, torts, civil procedure, criminal law, and contracts are taught during the first year. Law students are then allowed to pursue a particular interest, taking more advanced courses during their second and third years. Examples of advanced courses include U.C.C., criminal procedure, legal theory, and securities law.

The U.S. News and World Report shows that Only 29.2 percent of lawyers are women, 4.8 percent are African-American, and 2.8 percent are Hispanic; 92.6 percent are white.

The typical law student borrows, on average, has an outstanding student loan debt of $84,000.
